Le déjeuner sur l'herbe by Édouard Manet

A study of Modern painting, sculpture and architecture

from the late eighteenth century through the early twentieth

century. The course traces the progression of successive movements

in Modern Art from its origins in late 18th-century Neoclassicism

and Romanticism through early 20th-century styles, including Cubism,

Futurism, and Surrealism. Particular attention will be given to the

unfolding concept of Modernism in painting, sculpture and

architecture, as well as critical reaction to “the shock of

the new,” as witnessed by the emergence of avant-garde

movements such as Realism, Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism,

and Dada. Partially satisfies the Writing Intensive requirement.
