Giovanni Arnolfini and His Bride by Jan Van Eyck

 

This course will survey the arts of northern Europe

(the Netherlands, Holland and Germany) during the

Renaissance, from 1300-1600. The course will evaluate

the influence of political and religious institutions, such

as the papacy and the Catholic church, international trade

with Italy and Spain, the rise of Humanism and how they

shaped the development of one of the most fascinating

periods of western art history.
